Why it’s great to be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day

It’s great to be Irish all year round but St. Patrick’s Day is the one day of the year that we can really feel proud. For a small country, Ireland has really made its mark on the world. From our sporting achievements to our music legends to our talented actors and writers, with The Banshees of Inisherin picking up awards left, right and centre, there’s plenty to be proud of.

You get to dress up

There’s something about dressing up on St. Patrick’s Day that helps you get into the spirit of things. Whether you just pop on something green, pin some shamrock to your jacket, paint your face or go full Leprechaun, it brings everyone together and makes it more fun.

You get to have the craic

We Irish do know how to enjoy ourselves and St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect opportunity to relax, let your hair down (or dye it green!) and celebrate. With parades for the kids, trad sessions for the mums and dads and the obligatory drowning of the shamrock, there’s plenty of fun to be had.

You get a day off

Want an activity where you can get pulses racing, while still enjoying the beauty of Irish nature? Look no further than Zipit ziplining in the beautiful Dublin mountains.

The perfect activity for a thrill-seeking family, Zipit’s circuits include zip lines, swinging logs, cargo nets and rope bridges. And don’t worry if you have no experience – the circuits are suitable for everyone. Open seven days a week from 9am til 6pm.

Catch up with family and friends

We’re a pretty sociable bunch so St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect chance to catch up with family and old friends. If you want to make some new friends, you’ll find over half a million friendly faces waiting for you at Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Roll out the green carpet

St. Patrick’s Day is a very popular time for tourists to visit Ireland, with over 800,000 people arriving to join in the festivities. We can always be relied on to roll out the green carpet and make them feel welcome.

It’s the perfect time for a road trip

If crowds aren’t your thing, why not escape from it all? We’re blessed with some of the world’s most spectacular scenery and a long weekend just when the weather’s starting to improve makes it the perfect time for a road trip. From the epic Giant’s Causeway to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher to the breath-taking Ring of Kerry, you’ll be spoiled for choice, with an incredible selection of destinations just a car ride away. On a sunny day, you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.

The whole world celebrates with us

One of the best things about St. Patrick’s Day is that the whole world joins in the celebrations. St. Patrick’s Day is the world’s most popular national festival and is celebrated in over 200 countries worldwide.

As well as holding their own St. Patrick’s Day parades, some countries really go all out, lighting up their national monuments and landmarks in green in a phenomenon known as “the greening”. Some of the world’s most iconic buildings, from the Empire State Building to the Sydney Opera House, have all turned green for St. Patrick’s Day and Chicago even turns its river green every year to mark the occasion.

There’s no place like home

While St. Patrick’s Day may be celebrated everywhere, there’s no place like home, so next time you feel jealous of our government ministers jetting off all over the world with bowls of shamrock, remember you’re at the centre of the party everyone wants to be at.
